Guilt and Self-Justification

At the Bus Stop
Andrew: Why are there so many McDonald's and Booster Juice cups on that trash can?
Me: Because people think they can recycle them.
Andrew: But they can't recycle those.
Me: I know, but somewhere along the journey they were holding a recyclable plastic bottle once, and they were about to throw it away and someone said to them, "don't throw that away, you can just leave it on top of the trash can and the homeless and poor who collect recyclables will come by and grab it." Then that person noticed that they frequently saw people leaving recyclables on top of trash cans rather than throwing them away. The person then realized that in fact, although it felt a bit lazy, leaving the bottle on the trash can was actually a morally and ethically superior choice to throwing the bottle away, which at least seemed like good manners.

What?

Why do people leave Booster Juice, McDonald's, and Starbucks cups on top of this trash can?
This is the question Andrew asked me while we were waiting for a bus a few days ago, and I was surprised that I had a very pointed (and irrationally long) answer to his question at the tip of my tongue. This led to a few more conversations on the topic, and I have a blog about it jumbling around in my head. I'm happy to share it, but I lack the energy right now because I'm wiped from a full day of mucking around with computers (work not fun).
