Kafe Katzenjammer - the Best Breakfast in Vancouver

at least so far…

This is the second weekend in a row that I've made my way down to cafe Katzenjammer. I love good breakfast, and have been searching for an acceptable place (reminiscient of "sin of cortez" and "morning thunder" back in my chico days) ever since I arrived; only to be dissapointed time and time again by overpriced, underportioned, not-so-well-cooked breakfast type meals.

Since cafe Katzenjammer (what a weird name, after some 100 year old german comic strip) is only two blocks from my house, I knew it existed but had never gone in, being fairly unfamiliar with their staple of german style food.

But last saturday I decided I would give it a try as I was looking for a quick breakfast / lunch pick me up. If only I had known about it sooner…

The cafe apparently does german food well (read a review) but what I encountered was simply a really good and hearty breakfast. I tried the special, a spinach and shrimp omlette surrounded by tasty potato pancakes; the latter is hard to make and i'm usually dissapointed, but these were perfect, right consistency and great flavor, and HUGE. To top it off I tried one of their bratwursts on the side, and it was excellent. It seems like no big deal, it's just a piece of sausage, but when you come across a truly good one the difference is apparent.

It was actually way too much food (a good thing) and fairly pricey ($13) for breakfast, but I'll gladly pay a little extra for a really good meal in a beautiful and spotless dining room with excellent, actually really excellent, service.

Today even though I had no one to go with, I found myself heading down there again. Guess I couldn't resist so I grabbed my book and enjoyed another – wait for it – spinach omlette and potato pancakes. This time I skipped the bratwurst and got a coffee. Still $13 and still too much food. I'm thinking this is going to be somewhat of a tradition, so next time maybe I'll bring a friend and order something a little less hearty.

Oh man, I love a good breakfast. – dan.

it’s obvious that nobody’s gonna comment on this. So i just left a comment to say that.

Mmmmm – that reminds me of a breakfast I had in Sonora (or was it Angels Camp?) once at a quaint, but very popular, restaurant that I can’t remember the name of. I, too, ordered potato pancakes, and they were wonderful. Plus, they had this really great, thick toast… Ahh, breakfast!

I’m surprised Buddy didn’t make a comment about how this breakfast you mention here pales in comparison to the Buddy Special from Morning Thunder …
