I’m Sorry to Say This…

But I really don't like Sufjan Stevens at all.

Everybody else loves him and I suppose I can understand why. He sort of has a greatful dead-ish-slash-fish-ish kind of sound that involves all kinds of wierd sounds on his M-1 Korg Keyboard.

For me that kind picasso-esque take on music, which attempts to trancend genre to create a genre-less form of music that somehow coheses into its own genre, feels bit lacking/wanting. I'm not 100% sure that I'm willing to call it music. 1

I know a lot of people are going to disagree with this, and some will probably think I'm a fool. But remember, I've pointed out a lot of really good bands/artists

like the fray,
like snow patrol,
like nelly furtado,
like mutemath,
like over the rhine,

And I could point out other ones:

like the killers,
like U2
like jason mraz
like hey ocean (maybe I did point them out)

So I should have some street cred there. All I'm saying though is that Sufjan Stevens is not very good. And if you hate me for that, maybe you can tell me why I'm wrong. Otherwise, I'm just fast-forwarding to the next song every time one of his comes up. It's like a reflex. The Sufjan Snap if you wanna call it that. – dan

I feel this way about the fray. I think they are unoriginal and boring. I have my own “fray-snap-ish” thing. And I don’t think you don’t need to be sorry to say anything like this. P.S. I like phish too.

Jeff,

You need to explain why I’m wrong. The only things I’ve gotten in response to my sufjan thoughts is, (a) Creative instrumentally and (b) Amazing lyrics. And my whole point is that the instruments aren’t creative, they’re just random and noisy.

I agree with you about the fray, they’re definitely unoriginal and probably boring (unless you’re using them as video game background music). With the exception of the song “Hundred” which I think is just a beautiful ballad.

HAHAHA! This is pretty funny. I was just listening to this SjS song on my ipod called, “You Could be Happy,” and it had some strange bells and was pretty good, especially the singing voice, and I was like, “Aw man, this is pretty good I’m gonna have to renig now.”

But then I realized a couple of songs later that the ipod was NOT on shuffle but rather just playing the Snow Patrol album.

So yeah that song is by Snow Patrol and not SjS, (whew!).

lyrical genius, creative instrumentally, talented musician, instinctively and unusually different, intelligent and thought-provoking, yet light-hearted and fun. snow patrol is really good too.

Yeah,

it’s hard to argue with that, you seem to word it better somehow. I still can’t place my finger on it but there’s something. Almost like they’d play that music at the fair on the merry go round or something. OH well. Fine, you win.

just like american idol, you will one day like sufjan stevens as well … because he rules. if you were to see him play live in concert, even a video (well recorded and edited of course) on youtube, you would soon have your opinion (once again) changed.

next to csi: miami, 24 is the greatest show on to (please note heavily implied sarcasm). also, the office and studio 60 and sportscenter are pretty darn good too.
